What is GPS?
GPS is an acronym for Global Positioning System. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS receivers, such as the one required for the TeleNav application (AT&T 71142), pick up signals transmitted by the GPS satellites and use those signals to determine the exact location of the receiver. Due to the nature of the technology, GPS works in virtually any weather condition.
What is TeleNav GPS Navigator?
When GPS is paired with the TeleNav Navigation software, users are able to get precise driving directions without knowing their current location. To set the software up, users are sent a link to download the TeleNav Navigation software directly to a supported device. This software facilitates communication between the GPS satellite network, and the TeleNav Navigation server, using the AT&T 71142 GPS Receiver. When routes are requested, they are created on the TeleNav Navigation server and streamed to the device using the latest directions and maps available, utilizing AT&T's nationwide data network. As a result, users must be in a GPRS coverage area for the TeleNav Navigation software to function correctly. Also, since TeleNav Navigation service does not provide directions or maps for destinations outside the United States, the user will need to be in the United States to use the service.
NOTE: Users should consider subscribing to a Unlimited MEdia Bundle or Unlimited PDA Connect plan, as initial TeleNav setup uses 100 to 200 Kb of data, and each route or business location request uses 35 to 50 Kb of data (These are estimates - Actual use may be larger).
TeleNav Questions and Answers
Example of a TeleNav solution
A customer who works as a consultant for a small accounting firm visits client sites to perform on-site audits. Since he is often on-site with clients for several weeks at a time, he likes to become familiar with that part of town and the services available to him in the surrounding area (restaurants, copy centers, post offices, etc.). He typically has a long commute across his metro area. He would use TeleNav to get directions from his home to client sites. He could also use TeleNav to determine what retailers are nearby, in his effort to become more accustomed to his frequently-changing surroundings.
